Land Acquisition

Getting started with a natural burial ground means two things: sourcing land and funds. If you think you might be able to help with a land donation, we'd be delighted to speak with you.

Why donate land?
Are you a landowner interested in dedicating 2-20 acres to this kind of natural burial ground via sale or donation? Owners who sell or deed only part of their land for green burial may gain an income stream through burial plot sales, cemetery stewardship, and/or cultural events held on cemetery property.

What features would the land have?
Ideally, land should:
  • have appropriate zoning
  • have municipal and neighbor consent
  • have access to a public road or the potential for creating access
  • have no owner restrictions or deed covenants
  • be relatively flat
  • not be located in a flood zone
  • have no wells on the property
  • have no surface water
  • be removed from development
  • have well-drained soils with some clay content

How would it work?
Some rural property that is zoned agricultural will allow green cemeteries, so checking local zoning on the property is a good first step. A purchase agreement would include contingencies based on approval by the state, city and/or county.
